Chapter One: The reuniting of two friends

The light blue unicorn’s heartbeat pumped in time with the music. The smell of sweat from the ponies on the club dance floor mixed with the sweet smell from the smoke machines on either side of the stage. His hooves adjusted dials and flipped switches, causing red, green and yellow beams of light to blink and pierce the smoke. The glow sticks around his neck clicked together as he bobbed his head in time with the beat. He smiled and his blue eyes twinkled behind his aviator sunglasses.

This was what he lived for. His audience swayed and moved with the beats reverberating from the loudspeakers. About two and a half minutes into the song, his horn flickered and images of the three white stars of his cutie mark appeared on the dance floor. He held a hoof to the headphones over his ears, losing himself in the melody, the beat washing over and pulsing through him.

The song came to an end, breaking him from his trance. The audience stopped dancing and pounded their hooves in appreciation, cheering and screaming.

The microphone in front of him glowed a pale blue as he lifted it to his mouth. “Thanks, everypony; you’ve been a wonderful audience tonight and for all the time I’ve been here,” he said, flashing them a crooked smile as his voice echoed across the room. “We’re closing down now, so I’ll be signing off for the last time. This is MC W1SH, wishing you all the best.”

He removed his headphones, placing them on the soundboard and pulled the glow sticks from his neck and tossed them into the crowd, a little something that he had done at the end of every show for as long as he could remember. Stepping backstage and out into the main area of the club, he was surrounded by a crowd of ponies wanting to shake his hoof and wish him well. Bit by bit the crowd dissipated, and the bouncers took care of the stragglers. He looked around the old place, reminiscing. He had been the DJ there for the past seven years and the thought that it was his last night made the entire thing seem surreal. It was the last night for everything at the club. The owner, Mickser, who also happened to be the bartender, was retiring and hadn’t been able to find anypony to take over the old place, so he had sold it.

The DJ walked over to the bar and took a seat at the end.

“Hey, Mick,” he called to the bartender. The old unicorn stallion stepped over to where the DJ sat. His mostly white mane still held a little of its former tan color and his coat was a light sandy tan. He had a drink shaker for a cutie mark and in his green eyes were the perfect balance of a fiery spirit and the twinkle of wisdom that comes with age.

“You want your usual hard cider one last time, W1SH, or should I make you somethin’ special?” Mickser asked.

The DJ thought for a moment, loosening his white tie and undoing the top fastener on his black dress shirt. “What the hay, give me a glass of the good scotch, on the rocks.”

“Comin’ right up.” The bartender poured him his drink and slid it over to him. “It’s been a real pleasure havin’ you DJ for me, W1SH.”

“Mick,” he replied, finishing a sip of his drink, “I’ve worked for you for a long time now and I’ve known you even longer than that. Heck, you’re like the cool uncle I never got. You don’t have to call me by my stage name.”

“I know, Lights,” said Mickser, “Just hoping your name will become a household word someday. You manage to find another gig yet?”

“Yeah, I have. I got a job at a place in Ponyville. I start in a couple days.”

“Good for you,” Mickser smiled, “Pretty soon everypony in that little town will be screaming the name ‘Neon Lights’ tripping over each other for your autograph.”

Neon chuckled. “Well, I doubt that. What about you? What are you going to do now with all your free time?”

“Well, for one thing, I’m gonna be sleeping like a normal pony. No more getting home at four in the morning and not waking up until the afternoon.  I’ll be going to bed at a reasonable hour. I’ll start with a few months off to do some things around the house I’ve been promising myself I’d do.” He paused and waggled his eyebrows suggestively. “Maybe spend a bit more time with the Mrs.”

Neon sputtered in the middle of an attempt to sip his drink and the tan bartender continued.

“Might spend time with my daughter, too. Maybe take the family on a vacation, get away from it all. After that, I’m not really sure. Always been afraid of becoming a grouchy old fart sitting around playing bingo; I just gotta be doing something useful. Maybe I could teach Bartending School.”

“We’re all done, boss,” said one of the club’s bouncers, walking up to the counter.

“Thanks, Bruiser. All right, Lights, you head on home now.”

“You sure you don’t want me to stay and help take things down?”

“Nah,” Mick replied, waving a dismissive hoof. “Though, you could do me a favor by taking this. Consider it a going away present.” He lifted up an unopened bottle of scotch in his magic and levitated it to the counter. Neon looked at the label and his eyes went wide. What he had just been drinking was the good scotch. The stuff in the bottle was the really good scotch.

“Seriously?” he asked in disbelief, “you only use this stuff when a celebrity comes in.”

“Yeah, why do you think it’s unopened? Take it. I already got too much other liquor I need to get rid of. You can use it to impress some lucky filly someday.”

“All right, Mick. Thanks again, for everything.” He walked over to the backstage area and placed the bottle in his saddlebag, slung the bag on his back and looked around the place again.

“Feels like you’re saying so long to a good old friend, doesn’t it?” he asked.

Mickser looked around the club. “Meh. Just a building. The important thing is all the memories we made.”

“Yeah, I guess you’re right.” The blue unicorn took a longing look at the disc jockey equipment still set up on stage. He didn’t have any of his own stuff. The stuff up there belonged to Mickser. Every song he’d ever written or played had been on that equipment. That would probably be the thing he missed most of all.

The tan unicorn placed a hoof on his shoulder. “You know, I’m probably gonna come by Ponyville to see you. How about if I happen to bring that old equipment with me and…’conveniently’ forget it?”

Neon froze and looked at the older stallion with a look of utter shock and disbelief.

“R-really? Are you serious? All of that equipment has to be worth at least a thousand bits!”

“Of course I’m serious. What do I need with a bunch of Disc Jockey equipment? You’ll take better care of it than I ever would anyway.”

Neon smiled so wide it threatened to split his face in half. He  wrapped his hooves around the other stallion’s barrel in a bone-crushing hug.

“Oh thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou!!!” he exclaimed. He released Mickser from the hug and grabbed his hoof, shaking it vigorously. “Thank you so much! I promise I’ll take good care of it.”

“I know you will,” said the tan stallion, recovering from the assault of gratitude. “That’s why I’m giving it to you. Now, go on, get outta here. I’ll try to have it packed and be down to see you in Ponyville in a week or two.”

Neon thanked Mickser again at least three times as he made his way over to the door. He took one last mental picture before heading out into the chilly night. It was about two thirty in the morning by now and the formerly busy streets of Canterlot scarcely had anypony on them. Neon made his way through the downtown area to his apartment building, smiling all the way.

Most of the things in the apartment had already been packed and moved to his new place in Ponyville. All that was left was the bed and fridge, which came with the apartment, some food in the fridge, and a couple suitcases. He placed his bags by the door and took off his shirt and tie, leaving on the white t-shirt he wore underneath. He placed the dress shirt and tie neatly in a nearby suitcase. He took off his sunglasses and placed them on another case and got into bed.

He lay awake for a little while, thinking. He was really going to miss the old place, but he was also looking forward to going somewhere new. He had been born and raised in Canterlot and lived here all his life. He hoped that Ponyville wouldn’t be too different. He smiled; at least his new place would have room for all the equipment Mickser had given him. Ponyville didn’t have a lot of apartments and none had looked like they would be vacant any time soon, so he had decided to buy a small house on the edge of town. He thought about the move and the new job until sleep finally took him.

----------------------------------------

Neon woke up at about eleven thirty and got out of bed. After a quick shower he ate a tulip sandwich and packed up the last of his things. When it was almost time to catch his train, he put on a black dress shirt with a white t-shirt underneath. After turning in his key, he put on his aviators and left the apartment building and walked down the cobblestone streets, making his way to the train station. The sun was gleaming on the many alabaster white buildings, making the city shine. The DJ let out a contented sigh and admired the city that had been his home, feeling both sad that he was leaving and excited about what would be his new home.

When he arrived at the train station, he saw through the flurry of activity that Mickser was waiting for him along with two pegasus mares, one a bright pink and the other a light blue. Both had golden yellow manes, the pink one’s done up in a bun while the light blue one sported a ponytail. Neon smiled and approached the trio.

“Hey, Aurora,” he called out to the blue pegasus. “Here to see me off?”

She turned and smiled at him. “Actually, Neon, I’m here to persuade you to stay by using my feminine charms.” She tilted her head and batted her eyelashes in a manner that looked more silly than seductive.

He dramatically put a forehoof over his chest and gasped sarcastically. “Be still my beating heart, I think it’s working.”

The two of them laughed at their little joke. Aurora had been a waitress at the club when Neon started working there. They became friends and spent a lot of time together and the other workers had teased about the two of them dating. Neon and Aurora had laughed hysterically because the thought of dating each other sounded as ridiculous to them as dating a brother or sister. Thus their little joke started. They would occasionally talk to each other as if they were dating or in love and get a good laugh.

Aurora’s special talent was in food service, as evidenced by the notepad on a serving tray that was her cutie mark. He didn’t see her much anymore because she had gotten a job as the manager of a fancy restaurant chain.

Neon chuckled as the laughter subsided. “Oh, that never does get old, does it?”

“Nope,” she agreed. “Makes me laugh every time."

Neon turned to greet the other two ponies that had come to see him. “You guys didn’t have to come all the way down here to see me off.”

The pink pegasus standing next to Mickser came up to the DJ and began straightening his collar and fussing over him. “Oh, nonsense, Neon. Of course we had to come and say goodbye. Gotta make sure you’re all ready for your big new job. Mick? Did you remember to bring the care package I made?”

“Yeah, Dawn, I remembered,” the tan stallion replied, pulling a box out of the saddlebag at his side.

The pink pegasus took it from his grasp and peeked inside, as if the contents had somehow escaped on the journey to the station. She then tucked it in Neon’s saddlebag, using the care one might use with a newborn foal.

“I packed plenty of soup and some of my special homemade biscuits so you’ll have something to eat until you get settled. Have you got everything you need? Are you sure you didn’t forget anything?”

“Yes, Dawn, I’m sure,” he replied. “Thank you.”

“Have you got your ticket?”

The blue unicorn patted the breast pocket of his dress shirt. “Right here.”

“Have you got your-“

“Mom, he didn’t forget anything,” said Aurora, rolling her eyes.

“Oh, dear,” said Dawn, noting her daughter’s reaction. “I’m sorry, Neon, am I embarrassing you?”

“No, it’s fine,” replied Neon.

The whistle of the train blew, announcing it was time to board.

“Oh, you’d better hurry. Don’t want to miss the train.”

Neon gave the pink mare a hug. “I’ll miss you guys.”

“We’ll miss you too, hon.”

The DJ turned to Aurora and gave her a hug as well.

“Bye, Neon. Come back and see us soon.”

“I will. You be sure to visit too.”

“You got it.”

Mickser gave Neon a hoofshake. “Bye, W1SH. I’ll be down to give you that equipment soon.”

“All right. Thanks again, Mick.”

Gathering his suitcases, the blue stallion crossed the platform and boarded the train. When he had found his seat, he looked out the window and waved at the three ponies on the platform.

“Bye,” they called to him as the train began to move away.

“You be sure to find yourself a nice filly while you’re down there,” called Dawn.

Neon laughed and waved until the train had pulled away and was speeding down the path through the mountain.

--------------------------------

It was late afternoon by the time the train reached the Ponyville train station. Neon got off and began the walk through town. A few ponies greeted him amicably as he passed and he returned their greetings in kind. He navigated the streets until he reached a small, single story white building with a small shed on the side.

The interior of the house wasn’t much to look at. The front door opened to a living room with blue carpet. On the right wall there were two openings looking into a small kitchen, one a half wall with a countertop and the other a doorway. To the left was a small hallway with four doors.  The two doors on the left of the hall were the bathroom and a hall closet, the door on the right, the bedroom, and the door at the end of the hall had a stairway to the basement. On the back wall was a sliding door that let out into the back yard. Various boxes and furniture from previous moving trips were stacked and placed against the walls.

Exhausted from the long day’s travel, he went into the bedroom and took off his sunglasses. Taking a look around, he groaned and facehoofed at his stupidity. The bedroom contained all the boxes of stuff that belonged there and it had a little closet on the right wall. The only thing it didn’t have was a bed. He’d forgotten to get one before he moved. Hearing a knock at the door, he decided to deal with that later and placed his bags and suitcases on the floor.

Walking out of the bedroom, he ducked under the streamers above the door, moved around any boxes that were in his way and passed the pink mare standing in his living room and-

Wait. Streamers? Pink mare?

“HEY THERE!! WELCOME TO…”

“GAAA!!!”

Neon crouched lower to the ground and ignited his horn, glaring at the intruder in a way that he hoped looked threatening.

“Who are you? What are you doing in my house?”

“I’m Pinkie Pie!” the mare replied, oblivious to his reaction. “I saw you get off the train and I realized that you just moved here and that means you might not have any friends yet so I thought I’d throw you a party so you could make new friends and not be all alone. Ooh, and by the way, somepony’s at the door so you might want to get that.”

She continued grinning at him and his only reaction was to stare at her incredulously. He wracked his brain trying to think of a way that she could possibly have gotten in. He’d heard somepony knocking at the door, but he hadn’t heard the door open. Maybe she was a burglar and was trying to seem insane in order to make an insanity plea at her trial. No that didn’t make sense; no thief would be crazy enough to rob houses in broad daylight, let alone a pony who was so brightly colored. Maybe she was just insane.

Another knock came from the door and he moved to answer it, hoping it was a police officer and keeping an eye on the mare.

“Surprise!” shouted a large group of ponies standing on his front lawn.

The pink mare bounced up beside him in an invasion of personal space. “Oh. yay, the guests are here! Come on in everypony!”

Before he could offer so much as a word of protest, Neon’s house was filled with ponies eating snacks and dancing.

“What is going on here?” he demanded before he felt a poke on his shoulder. Turning to see who it was, he found himself being addressed by an orange earth pony wearing a cowpony hat and a white unicorn with a curly purple mane.

“Hello, sir” said the unicorn. “We apologize for our friend Pinkie Pie. She always throws a welcoming party for any new ponies that come to town. She can take a bit of getting used to.”

The orange mare smiled and extended a hoof. “Howdy there, Ah’m Applejack and this here is mah friend Rarity. We’d like to welcome you to Ponyville.”

“Hi,” he said, shaking her hoof and eyeing the pink mare as she bounced around distributing cupcakes. “The name’s Neon Lights.”

“Pleased to meet ya, Neon. How about we introduce you to some of your fellow Ponyvillians?”

Neon smiled, starting to warm up to the idea of the welcoming party. “That sounds good.”

The DJ’s next hour or so was spent being introduced to many of the residents of the town. Applejack and Rarity introduced him to a few of their friends and other ponies they knew and helped him explain to Pinkie that, while he was grateful for her making him feel welcome, he would prefer a little more warning next time.”

The party continued into the evening and the guests began to dwindle. Neon was mingling and chatting with a few ponies when Pinkie grabbed his hoof.

“Come on,” she said, pulling him in the direction of the door. “There’s one more pony you gotta meet.”

She pulled him to where a white unicorn with an electric blue mane and purple sunglasses had just joined the party.

“Hey, Pinks,” the mare greeted as the party mare approached. “How’s it hangin’?”

“Great! The Cakes’ laundry is all hung up on the clothesline and drying nicely.”

The white mare chuckled, taking Pinkie’s randomness in stride. “Awesome.” Turning to Neon, she offered a hoof. “Hey, Neon, how ya been?”

Before he could stop himself, the blue unicorn let a very fangirl-like squee escape. He’d instantly recognized the mare as DJ-PON3. The most popular DJ to ever hit the music scene.

And she knew his name!

Neon felt like he was going to faint.

He quickly tried to tell himself not to panic. He just had to act cool and everything would be fine.

“Hi!” he exclaimed loudly. “I’mNeonLightsI’msuchahugefancanIhaveyourautograph?!”

The mare chuckled. “What? Don’t you recognize me?” She lowered the glasses a little, revealing a set of striking magenta eyes. “It’s Vinyl Scratch.”

Neon’s jaw dropped. “Vinyl?”

“In the flesh. Have I really changed that much?”

Taking another look, Neon did recognize the mare in front of him as the old friend he knew from high school. When he knew her, her hair had been done quite differently, much neater and longer. She also used to wear fancy clothes, though begrudgingly, at the behest of her parents. Despite all the changes, though, he could still see the same rebellious gleam in her eye that had always been there.

“No,” he replied. “I guess not. You just look different. It’s great to see you again.”

“You too,” she replied, replacing her glasses. “Well, I guess you know what I’ve been up to since high school. What have you been doing?”

“Not much really. After I graduated, Mick gave me a job playing at his club.”

Vinyl raised her eyebrows. “Mick? As in Mickser? The grouchy old stallion that used to live in the apartment next to mine? How’s he doing?”

“He’s fine. He’s retiring and sold the club”, Neon explained. “But, for the record, he was only grouchy because you were in your room blaring your music when he was trying to sleep,” he said teasingly.

She shrugged. “What can I say? I do my best work at night.”

He smiled. She really was still the same old Vinyl. “So, Ponyville, huh? Never had you pegged as a small town mare.”

The white mare’s eyebrows raised as if she were rolling her eyes behind her glasses. “Have to be. Otherwise I can’t get away from the ‘adoring fans’ long enough to actually make music. It’s not all boring, though. I went into business with a friend and we opened up our own club. I’m the DJ, and he’s the bartender. We kinda split the business side between us, and boy is there a lot of it. It’s the only club in Ponyville, so business is going great.”

“Wait, your friend’s name wouldn’t happen to be a guy named Twilight Sky, would he?”

“Yeah, why?”

“He hired me to DJ at your club.”

“Get out!” she exclaimed in surprise, her eyebrows shooting above her shades. “Sky told me he’d hired a new DJ to help out with the club getting so busy. Come to think of it, when he had me listen to the music you sent us, I thought it sounded kinda familiar. This is great! Hey, you start tomorrow night, right?”

“Yeah. Sky said he wanted me to get into the swing of things before throwing me into, as he put it, ‘the madhouse that this place is on the weekend.’”

Vinyl chuckled. “Yeah, this town seems quiet, but these ponies really know how to party.”

“I noticed,” replied Neon, looking over to where Pinkie was doing a very energetic version of the chicken dance.

“Anyway,” Vinyl continued, “how about if we meet up tomorrow and I show you around Ponyville?”

“That’d be great!” he replied. He looked around at the number of partygoers. “Actually, the party seems to be slowing down. Why don’t you hang around afterward? I could use some help unpacking and I can make you dinner. It’d give us a chance to catch up some more.”

“You’ve got yourself a deal,” she said, smiling. “Maybe you can show me some of your stuff while I’m here.”

“Why don’t we do that now? I’ve got a few boxes of my records somewhere around here.”

Neon led Vinyl around the house, looking in box after box until he found the ones that held his records and his record player. When everything had been set up, he started the music.

Vinyl listened for a few moments until she smiled in recognition. “Isn’t this the song that you were so busy trying to fix that you missed homecoming?”

He nodded.

The white mare listened some more, her head starting to bob as she picked up the beat. “This is pretty good.” Her hoof started tapping and she began moving and dancing across the floor. Many of the others guests took her cue and started dancing by themselves and with each other.

“Come on,” Vinyl called from the middle of the sea of dancing ponies. “It’s your music. You should be dancing to it.”

Neon shook his head. “No thanks. I’m not much for dancing.”

Vinyl came over to where he was standing and grabbed his hoof. “Come on, dude. Get out here and shake it!”

“Vinyl!”

She pulled him out to the middle of the room and he felt all eyes fall on him. He took a nervous glance to his bedroom where he had left his aviators, wishing that he had them on. He felt a warmth at his side and turned to see Vinyl dancing right next to him.

“Come on!” she shouted over the music and the party-goers. “Let the music do the moving for you.”

Hesitantly, he began to move, swaying side to side with the beat. He closed his eyes and took in the sounds of the room, the smells, the feel of the floor vibrating with stamping hooves. Soon he was smiling and trying more complex moves.

“Way to go, Lights!”

The party continued for another couple of hours as the crowd of partying ponies began to thin out. The last to leave were Pinkie, Applejack and Rarity.

“Thanks for letting us use your house for the party!” she said as she wheeled her party cannon out the door. “Welcome to Ponyville.”

“Thanks, Pinkie,” Neon replied.

“Bye, Neon. It was real nice meetin’ ya.”

“You too, Applejack.”

“So anyway,” said Rarity, talking to Vinyl as she made her way to the door. “I’ve got the shoot with Photo Finish and I’m going to be showing the order for Hoity Toity next week. Will I be able to use your services again? I swear, making those two ponies work together is like pulling teeth. I don’t know how, but your music seems to get them both in a creative enough mood that they’re willing to work together.”

“You bet, Rare,” Vinyl replied.

“Thank you so much, darling. It is a shame that those two are in another ‘off again’ phase of their relationship. How many divorces have they had now? Two? Three?”

“This is their fourth. They hire me to play at their wedding every time they have another one.”

“Oh, that’s right. You know, we’ve both been so busy lately that we haven’t had a chance to chat. You simply must come by sometime.” Suddenly she gasped. “Ideeea! Why don’t you join Fluttershy and I on our weekly spa trip? We can get you a makeover and fix that unruly mane of yours.”

“Here we go again,” Vinyl groaned. “Sorry, cuz, I don’t do spas. Maybe we can hang some other time?”

Rarity frowned. “Oh, that’s a shame, darling. You have such lovely cheekbones. Oh, well. My offer still stands if you change your mind. I’ll be on my way so the two of you can catch up. Goodbye, Mr. Lights. I hope to see you again soon.”

The purple-maned mare took her leave and Vinyl let out a sigh.

“Phew, that was close. She didn’t offer to make you a new wardrobe or give you a manecut, did she?”

“What?” Neon laughed. “No, is she really that bad?”

“Nah. My cousin’s pretty cool. She likes making ponies look good. The problem is that her definition of looking good doesn’t really swing with me.”

Neon chuckled and moved to start unpacking boxes. “OK, I’ve stacked boxes in pretty much the same area as their contents should be put. All we have to do is put stuff away.”

“Sounds good.”

The two set to work unpacking, Neon telling Vinyl where he wanted to put things as they went.  They began with the stuff in the living room. They placed a couch in the middle of the room and slightly back, with a coffee table in front of it, and an easy chair by the wall to the right of the hallway. The bookshelves, which only required some minor assembly, were erected to the right and left of the sliding door. When that was done, Vinyl opened a box and began placing books on one of the shelves.

“Try to keep them in the order you unpack them,” Neon explained, “I have them organized by topic.”

She nodded and continued her shelving. A puzzled look crossed over her face as she read some of the titles, though. There weren’t many books, only enough to fill a few shelves. Some of the books were notebooks, and a few were on Disc Jockey related topics, including a few back issues of a popular music magazine. It was the rest of them that had her puzzled. There were about half a dozen or so that were on the topic of astronomy and many of the others were works of fiction. Neon had the entire Daring Do series, as well as other action, suspense, romance, sci-fi, and even picture books.

“What’s up with these books, Lights?” she asked, holding up a tome containing pictures of Equestrian scenery.

“Didn’t I ever tell you what my special talent is?”

She shrugged. “Probably, but it’s been a while.”

“I’m good at illusionary magic. You know, making ponies see things that aren’t there, bending light different ways, that kind of thing. In order to make an illusion really believable, it helps to have an active imagination. The books give me a wide range of insight on how to make things look.”

“Cool,” she replied, genuinely impressed. She gave him a teasing smile. “I didn’t know you were such an egghead.”

He chuckled. “Only when I’m reading about something I really like.”

“And the astronomy books?”

“I like to stargaze,” he replied, going back to placing various odds and ends on the other bookshelf. “I can even make a planetarium if I have the right setting. It’s how I got my cutie mark”

The two continued unpacking. When they were getting hungry, they moved to the kitchen. It was a fairly small room. There was a counter going around the two long sides and the small side furthest from the door. Across from the door was a space in the counter with a refrigerator in the corner. The tile floor was a tessellation of rectangles in various earthy colors.

They unpacked boxes of dishes and silverware and put them in their proper places in drawers and cupboards. Vinyl continued placing some appliances in the appliance garage while Neon set about beginning dinner.

“I don’t have much, I’m afraid,” he said apologetically. “I couldn’t pack much of anything perishable since I had to leave the fridge at my apartment. All I’ve got is some canned soup and biscuits.”

Vinyl looked up from what she was doing. “What kind of soup?”

“Alphabet soup.”

The white unicorn snickered.

“What?” he asked, looking at her quizzically. “Don’t tell me you’ve never had alphabet soup.”

“No, I’ve had it; when I was, like, seven. That stuff’s for foals.”

“Says who?” he asked, opening a can and pouring it into a pot.

She opened her mouth to reply, but couldn’t come up with a rebuttal.

When the soup was done, the two sat on stools at the counter to enjoy it. Neon smiled as an idea crossed his mind. He lifted his bowl to his lips and began drinking away some of the broth. Then, levitating his spoon, he began fishing through the letters.

He tapped Vinyl's shoulder to get her attention and levitated a few of the letters up, spelling out the phrase “hey Vinyl” while trying to contain his snickering.

The white unicorn burst out laughing. It was the kind of laugh that was extremely infectious and he soon found himself laughing with her. When she had calmed down some, she levitated a few of her own letters out, spelling the phrase “u r a dork.” This made him laugh even harder. He reached out with his magic, with some difficulty between giggles, and spelled a reply.

The two continued the simple conversation until the soup was gone, laughing and having more fun than either of them had had in years.

There it is. The first rewritten chapter. I know there are those of you that like Vinyl with red eyes. Don’t worry, I have something special in store for fans of that trait. I’ll get back to writing the rest when I’m done with Soarin’ with Apples.
Thank you again for your patience.
This is the old version of the story.
