Summary: While examining a magic mirror, Twilight discovers a shocking surprise

Finally! After a month of procrastinating and finnicking with shading, I bring you an update. Ignore the shadows that are wrong and the scaling, which seems to be a chronic condition when I draw Sky Wishes. Too small the first time I drew her, too big this time.

I hardly have the words to describe what happened today. I’m still buzzing so much from all the excitement that I can hardly get to sleep. Hopefully getting it all down while it’s fresh will calm me.

The event started yesterday. Spike received a letter from the princess asking me to Canterlot the next day if possible. The letter said she needed my help with something. It struck me as rather cryptic and vague, but I replied in affirmative and Spike and I took the train the next morning.

Celestia greeted us at the gate when we reached the castle. We ambled down the halls to one of the lesser ballrooms, chatting on the way. I had little news to give her of the girls. We all seemed to be so busy with work and family these days. It had been a while since all of us got to really catch up and spend time together.

Celestia said she would let someone else explain her reason for summoning us. When we went inside, we were all surprised to see Daring Do waiting for us, standing next to a tall mirror.

Daring explained that the mirror was found in a temple she had recently unearthed. At first, she hadn’t given it much thought, just seeing it as one of the many other artifacts to catalogue.

Note to self: ask Daring about the cataloguing system she uses.

As she was examining it later, though, she said that it ‘gave her the willies’ and she thought it best to report it to the princess’ wizards, who then informed Celestia.

I gave the mirror a cursory glance. Sure enough, it did have a rather odd aura about it. There was something familiar about that feeling. I knew I’d been around something like that before.

Already I had a few hypotheses running through my head.Perhaps the mirror led to another world, perhaps it was the focal point of some ancient mage’s magic. This warranted further study. There could be implications in the area of charmed magical objects.

I wished I had thought to bring my copy of ‘Auras and Magical Charms for Dummies’.

I heard Celestia and Spike chuckling by the door. Spike said I had ‘that face’ again and went to grab a notebook.

Ignoring them, I gave the mirror a closer look. I couldn’t ascertain the material that composed the frame. It seemed sturdy, able to hold a great deal of magic. Perhaps the entire mirror was brought into existence by its maker instead of merely being charmed. I remembered noticing material of a similar nature in some of the things that I’d seen Discord materialize.

I stared at my reflection. No revelations of any kind, meaning it wasn’t a seer’s mirror.

Spike returned and passed me some paper. I started sketching the mirror, and my mind started to wander.

Life seemed to be passing by so fast. Most of my friends had special someponies now. Some were starting families, having foals. Seeing all of them, how happy they were, had brought the idea to my attention more frequently. Maybe, someday...

With the mirror sketched, I decided to do some tests the old fashioned way. I touched one of the legs. It definitely didn’t feel like any naturally occurring substance. I touched the glass...

That was when it happened.

I felt something, a shock, like touching a hot stove. The glass came alive with a bright glow, my reflection distorting as the mirror started rippling. My image became clouded, changing color and size. It grew smaller and shifted to a soft pink before solidifying into the image of a small pegasus filly, possibly no more than a few months old.

I heard Celestia and Spike gasp. I took a step back in surprise as the filly slowly stepped forward, her body sliding out of the mirror. When she had emerged, the small pegasus burbled happily.

I proceeded to faint.
